he Hobbit is set to begin shooting on March 21 at Stone Street Studios in New Zealand, but the entire cast assembled in the country about a month ago. Above is your first image of the collected actors. That’s Martin Freeman (foreground right) and thirteen men of varying size who will, through practical and digital trickery, become the company of dwarves that hires Bilbo Baggins (Freeman) to be their burglar, the better to reclaim their ancestral treasure from the dragon Smaug.

The photo comes from a press conference (video here) announcing the beginning of production. Director Peter Jackson was unable to attend (and is therefore not pictured) as he is under ‘house arrest’ (his joke) while he recuperates from recent surgery. You can click the photo to enlarge slightly, and a rundown of the rest of the cast is after the break.

Reprising their roles (and not pictured) are Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett. Sylvester McCoy plays Radagast the Brown, and Mikael Persbrandt is Beorn. The Dwarf Company includes:

* Richard Armitage (MI-5, Captain America) as Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the Dwarves, whose grandfather ruled the Lonely Mountain settlement destroyed by Smaug.
* Aidan Turner (Being Human) and Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders) as Kili and Fili, nephews of Thorin.
* James Nesbitt (Bloody Sunday, Millions) as Bofur, “a disarmingly forthright, funny and occasionally brave Dwarf.”
* Adam Brown as Ori, “another of the Dwarf Company which sets out to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the infamous dragon, Smaug.”
* Graham McTavish (Secretariat) as Dwalin, blue-bearded, first to arrive at the home of Bilbo Baggins.
* John Callen as Oin, skillful fire-maker. Brother of Gloin.
* Stephen Hunter (All Saints) as Bombur, the fat, sleepy and slow member of Thorin’s company.
* Mark Hadlow (King Kong) as Dori, strongest of the Dwarves, who carries Bilbo on his back at one point.
* Peter Hambleton (The Strip) as Gloin, brother of Oin, initially suspicious of Bilbo’s worth, but eventually convinced. Father of Gimli from The Lord of the Rings.
* Jed Brophy (The Lord of the Rings) is the dwarf Nori
* William Kircher is the dwarf Bifur
* Ken Stott (Charlie Wilson’s War) is the Dwarf Lord Balin

clint mansell to score mass effect 3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q & A:

Do you do much work for other outlets like computer games? Mike Patton, for example, has most recently voiced The Darkness.

CM: I'm doing a video game this year actually. Mass Effect 3. Funnily enough, talking about Mike, we've exchanged emails about the possibility of doing a show featuring the Quartet and people they've collaborated with. It'd be a Kronos show, with different rooms for other people to do their thing, then bringing it all together. It's pretty cool-sounding.

I'm definitely interested in different outlets – that's one of the reasons I get involved in short films. It's not so much that I can experiment as it is to be in a situation where nobody's looking over your shoulder. Short films are usually made by young people and they've got ideas I can bounce off. They can take me in a different direction.

So in a game, the character might arrive at a big boss and you have to have a piece that can quickly become dramatic.

CM: That's what I'm figuring. As I was saying about Public Enemy and re-working old hip-hop tunes for Requiem, and kind of re-working old ballet tunes for Black Swan, with something like Mass Effect you're more like a DJ, with all these elements. You've got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent. You've got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts. You can bring the pain when required.

shatner makes more music(metal black)

William Shatner is back in the studio working on yet another great big pile of Shat-mazing, Incredibly Strange music. It's been over a week since Shatner first formally proclaimed Zakk Wylde's mad skills via Twitter ("Best, Bill"), but our sources on the scene confirm that some big metal heavy-hitters have been engaged to play backup to Captain Kirk.

Peter Frampton and Mike Inez (who will be playing "Iron Man" with fellow Ozzy alum, Zakk Wylde) are definitely participating and our source claims artists slated to perform (but who haven't done their parts yet) include Steve Howe of Yes, Ian Paice of Deep Purple and the god among men, Brian May of Queen. Supposedly it's only a matter of scheduling that prevents confirmation (come on May, make this happen!). Finally, it wouldn't be a space themed album without the space man and his self proclaimed Space Bass, Bootsy Collins!

(Caveat: some of these people might not appear on the final album. Reportedly, Shatner runs a loose (space)ship and sessions are fun and chaotic, nobody knowing how or when they're gonna happen. Picture session musicians standing next to their iPhones waiting for the "Bill is ready RIGHT NOW" text.)

There are almost 20 songs slated for inclusion so far and all are to have a "space" or "flying in space" theme. Um, ok, that is EXACTLY the same as before, but who would want anything else from Captain Kirk?

Track list currently includes "Bohemian Rhapsody" (which May will not be playing on-no joke), a Byrds song, "Space Odyssey," "Iron Man," "Learn to Fly" and... wait for it... "SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE"! Brace for impact, that one's got a chance of replacing "Rocket Man" as all time greatest Shatner moment.
